Four childhood friends founded Pain D’Avignon in 1992 after coming to Massachusetts from the former Yugoslavia. They strived to channel old world traditions in their baking techniques, crafting fresh artisan bread reminiscent of the European bakeries they grew up with.  In 2000 two of the original founders, Uliks Fehmiu and Bane Stamenkovic, and their friend Tole Zurovac, moved to New York City to open an offshoot of the business.

From Cape Cod to New York City, Pain D’avignon built up a following and expanded their wholesale business to also serve local restaurants. In 2010 they opened their flagship retail location, Café D'avignon, at Essex Market. Pick up a loaf of seeded sourdough and brioche, and finish off your order with a famous Kouign-Amann and a coffee brewed from Stumptown beans.
